Virtual Workshop: Growing with Culture

Just Food is pleased to bring together a very exciting knowledge sharing workshop on growing with culture. Please join Celeste Smith and Michaela Cruz for a personal and deeply important conversation about connections between culture and growing.

Meet the facilitators

Celeste Smith (she/her) is Oneida from Six Nations of the Grand River Territory. She is
a seed steward, traditional agriculturalist and former professor of Traditional Ecological
Knowledge (TEK) at Niagara College. She works on Indigenous Food Sovereignty,
Land Justice and Indigenous Human Rights through Cultural Seeds (culturalseeds.com)
and Ga Gitigemi Gamik (wewillplantlodge.com). Ga Gitigemi Gamik (We Will Plant
Lodge) is an ecological training centre on a permanent Indigenous-stewarded site,
where women and 2SLGBTTQQIA+ persons work on the land together to (re)learn
ancestral agricultural methods lost through settler colonization.

Michaela Cruz runs Healing Hands Farm with her partner Dan Fuller. They offer high quality organically grown vegetables, prioritizing a wide-range of Asian greens and culturally significant staples that are underserved in the locally grown vegetable market. The farm is currently in transition to moving their farm to Mi’kMa’ki, Nova Scotia to start operation in 2023 with plans to expand perennial production. As a farmer in the Filipino diaspora, Michaela sees farming as a tangible way to facilitate resilience and resistance through healing plants and food.
