In-person: How to start, grow, and care for strong seedlings!

In partnership with Capital Greens, we’re hosting this workshop where you’ll learn how to get nearly 100% germination, and how to create the ideal conditions for your seedlings to grow into strong, healthy, high-yielding vegetable crops, right in your own home!

Come join us in the greenhouse where we will begin our workshop with a ~30 minute “classroom session”. Then, Farmer Mat will demonstrate step-by-step how to prepare your growing medium, fill your pots, plant your seeds, and care for your seedlings until its time to plant them in the garden. There will be plenty of opportunity to ask questions! We will even have some potting mix and other supplies available for purchase!

While the farmers will be unmasked but socially distanced during their presentation, Just Food and the Greenhouse farmers continue to require masks to be worn at all times by workshop attendees when within the greenhouse, without exception.  If for medical reasons you cannot wear a mask, the same course is available online, April 4, 2022

Meet the facilitator
Mat has been farming in Ottawa for the past 5 years, growing a variety of organic vegetables at Capital Greens Urban Farm. He started out growing vegetables in people’s suburban front and backyards before he took on a larger plot of land at the Just Food Community Farm. He also rents space in a heated greenhouse on-site. He runs a small vegetable CSA and market farm as well as an organic vegetable nursery, supplying seedlings to local gardeners and farmers alike.
